To his colleagues Dr. Leonard Orr is a radical. A professor of psychiatry at Northwestern University, Dr. Orr believes nearly 10% of the population has been abducted by aliens. All he needs is proof.
Plagued by nightmares, Katherine Edgewood writes to Dr. Orr after reading his book. She suspects she might have been abducted.
They agree to meet.
Under hypnosis, not only is Katherine able to recall the frightening memories of her abductions, but she unexpectedly becomes a channel for an alien entity named Artemis, that takes over her body and reveals the hidden purpose of centuries of alien contact.
This attracts the attention of Cynthia Reese, a producer for the televisions program "Encounters". Katherine now becomes the subject of an hour-long documentary.
Dr. Orr is thrilled that years of hard work have paid off, and the proof he has longed searched for is within reach.
But then there is a phone call. Harold Boggs, a fiery UFO skeptic, has arrived in town and wants to conduct his own investigation. Even though Dr. Orr fights to keep him away from Katherine, Boggs manages to gather enough information about the case to reveal the unsettling truths about Dr. Orr's methods, and call into question the basic tenets of ufology.
